The Manic Organic Farm anic Organic is a
ten acre market garden that has provided organic specialty produce to local consumers through farmers’ markets, restaurants, small groceries, and subscription vegetable shares. Started
in Portsmouth
in 1999 Manic Organic relocated its base of operations to Tiverton in 2006.
With access to more farmland, Manic Organic
expanded it's CSA membership in 2007 including a Barrington pickup site.
Manic Organic 2009:
The good news for the 2009 season is that Manic Organic will be returning to
the Aquidneck Growers Market on Saturday mornings in Middletown. We will
continue to participate in the Sakonnet Growers Market in Tiverton (Saturday
mornings from 9-1, June to Oct) which was a great success in its first
season. The bad news is that we will not be offering a CSA program in 2009.
It looks like a good possibility for 2010 when our infrastructure needs are
better met. Thanks for all the encouragement out there. I miss you too.
In terms of projects for the 2009 season, we are moving our
propagation greenhouse from Portsmouth to Tiverton this spring so look
forward to some spring plant sales. At the same time, we are planning on
installing the necessary electricity to run the produce cooler and the
greenhouse heater and fans. Two big projects. Very exciting stuff. Thanks to
David Rose who owns the property on which we farm for all his hard work
maintaining the land and tackling drainage issues. Stay tuned for more news.

Community Supported Agriculture
Community Supported Agriculture, CSA, is a concept that attempts to bring
consumers closer to their food source through a relationship with their local
farmer.
A subscription vegetable share entitles the consumer to a weekly bushel of fresh
seasonal produce throughout the growing season (June-October). This relationship
gives the farmer some security in selling produce as well as funds to purchase
supplies. This also gives the consumer exposure to an exciting array of organic
gourmet vegetables and the ways in which they are grown locally in
Rhode Island.
As development pressure and socioeconomic trends continue to threaten small
farms, CSA provides consumers an opportunity to vote with their dollars in
support of a local alternative to an increasing globalization of our food
supply. |
